Today (Tuesday, June 14th) the State is expected to convene a subcommittee which intends to accelerate the construction plans for throughout the country.
The plan includes 7,869 housing units in and around Jerusalem, with 4,212 over the Green Line – which is more than 50% of those planned for Jerusalem.
Also on the agenda of the Committee is the 1,600 new housing units in East Jerusalem’s Ramat Shlomo, the same construction plans that provoked a political crisis last year during the visit of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden. Netanyahu had promised Biden at the time that implementation of the plan was years away.
Peace Now Director General Yariv Oppenheimer: “Netanyahu is doing everything to create conflict with United States and to isolate Israel prior to September. On the behalf of the settlements, it seems one can lie to the Vice President of the United States and allow the promotion of construction plans that will work to prevent any future agreed upon settlement in Jerusalem.”
