There are concerns that the demolition is connected to Israel’s intention to soon begin construction of a new road between Al-Eizariya and A-Za’ayyem, aimed at diverting Palestinian traffic away from the Ma’ale Adumim area and closing off the entire E1 area to Palestinians.

In August 2025, the Civil Administration issued dozens of demolition orders for structures in Al-Eizariya: for shops at the eastern entrance to the town and for additional structures in more northern areas. All of these structures are located very close to the planned route of the road, and their demolition is apparently linked to plans to begin paving it soon. At the same time, the official reason for the demolitions is that the structures were built without permits. All demolition orders were issued for structures located in Area C, where planning and construction authority lies with Israel. Since Israeli policy is not to allow Palestinian construction in Area C, the structures were built without permits and are now slated for demolition.

Apparently, the planned demolition is part of the government’s recent efforts to advance the establishment of the settlement in E1, which would eliminate any possibility of a two-state solution and severely harm the Palestinian economy and the ability to develop a future state.

It should be noted that the detailed plan for the road has not been made public because the road is considered a “security road.” The reason for this is that part of the planned route passes through Area B, where Israel has no planning authority. In order to circumvent this planning restriction, the government is using the security justification as a pretext to pave the road through territory that, according to the agreements signed by Israel, is supposed to fall under Palestinian authority.

Border Police forces arrived on Wednesday (6/5/26) at a complex of shops and garages at the eastern entrance to Al-Eizariya, east of Jerusalem, and informed the shop owners that the state intends to demolish the shops this coming Sunday and that they must evacuate them.
