{"id":16621,"date":"2011-03-10T23:18:06","date_gmt":"2011-03-10T20:18:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peacenow.org.il\/en\/?p=16621"},"modified":"2016-02-01T23:19:58","modified_gmt":"2016-02-01T20:19:58","slug":"canadian-friends-of-peace-now-condems-comments-of-queens-student-rector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peacenow.org.il\/en\/canadian-friends-of-peace-now-condems-comments-of-queens-student-rector","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Friends of Peace Now condems comments of Queen&#8217;s student rector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>March 10, 2011 | Toronto, Canada<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Canadian Friends of Peace Now today condemned the anti-Israel diatribe authored by the student rector of Queen\u2019s University on the occasion of Israeli Apartheid Week, which is taking place on Canadian and international campuses this week.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Nick Day, who was elected to his position to represent the interests of Queen\u2019s students regarding social and financial affairs, seems to confuse rector with hector.\u00a0 He used the Remembrance Day observance last November to hector Israel about its treatment of the Palestinians, adding a note of divisiveness to what should have been a unifying event.\u00a0 But Mr. Day saved his most intemperate anti-Israel salvo for Israel Apartheid Week.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Following a statement by Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff that condemned the hatefest that is Israeli Apartheid Week, Mr. Day attacked Mr. Ignatieff\u2019s statement as \u201cdeeply unethical\u201d in a message posted on his Facebook page and sent to the activist website Rabble.ca.\u00a0 He contended that Israel is the perpetrator of \u201cperhaps the biggest human rights tragedy of my generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He then blasted Mr. Ignatieff\u2019s original statement, warning the Liberal Party Leader that if he continues to condemn the \u201ccritique of the genocide happening in Palestine, you and the party you lead are complicit in that genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">CFPN has never hesitated to criticize Israel\u2019s occupation of Palestinian territory, its reluctance (at times) to wage peace with the same vigour that it wages (at times) excessive war.\u00a0 But if not all criticism of Israel should be dismissed as anti-Semitism, neither should all criticism be accepted as legitimate.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We ask Mr. Day: Are Israeli actions against the Palestinians so minor that he feels those actions can only arouse indignation by being inflated to the level of genocide?\u00a0\u00a0 If Palestine is the \u201cbiggest human rights tragedy\u201d of his generation, what does that make the Rwandan massacres?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The point is not to argue for a hierarchy of human rights tragedies, but to have the honest discussion of the Palestinian issue that Mr. Day feels is missing.\u00a0 This week, it certainly is missing on Canada\u2019s campuses, and Mr. Day deserves some of the blame.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">____________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Canadian Friends of Peace Now is a Zionist organization and a member of the Canadian Jewish Congress.\u00a0 It is dedicated to enhancing Israel\u2019s security through peace with its neighbours and to supporting the Israeli Peace Now movement.
