{"id":16561,"date":"2011-05-04T20:57:17","date_gmt":"2011-05-04T17:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peacenow.org.il\/en\/?p=16561"},"modified":"2016-01-31T21:00:32","modified_gmt":"2016-01-31T18:00:32","slug":"cfpn-voices-cautious-hope-in-palestinian-unity-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peacenow.org.il\/en\/cfpn-voices-cautious-hope-in-palestinian-unity-deal","title":{"rendered":"CFPN Voices Cautious Hope in Palestinian Unity Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peacenowcanada.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">CANADIAN FRIENDS OF PEACE NOW<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">TORONTO\u2014[May 4, 2011]&#8211;Canadian Friends of\u00a0Peace Now has expressed cautious hope in the reconciliation agreement signed today in Cairo between the two main Palestinian factions.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;There are those like Israel\u2019s Prime Minister Netanyahu, who quickly condemned the deal, but we do not join them,&#8221; said CFPN Co-chair Prof. Stephen Scheinberg of Montreal.\u00a0 &#8220;Netanyahu has now assumed the role of a jilted suitor, telling the Palestinian Authority that it abandons peace with Israel in embracing Hamas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cHowever,&#8221; Scheinberg said, &#8220;Netanyahu has offered nothing to the PA, not even a sustained settlement freeze.\u00a0 He rejected every overture for peace from the most moderate leaders of the Palestinians and now he pretends to be the bride deserted at the altar of peace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Co-chair Sheldon Gordon of Toronto expressed some hope for the deal.\u00a0 &#8220;Since Hamas\u2019s takeover of Gaza, it\u2019s been said that the PA cannot speak for all Palestinians.\u00a0 Now that is about to change.
